Alaska
Golden North Hotel

Built in 1898, this oldest operating hotel
in Alaska is a two-story hotel, moved in 1908 by a horse
and capsten to the present location at 3rd and Broadway
St. in Skagway, Alaska. The owner added a third story and
the world famous golden dome at this time.
The Corrington purchased the property in 1997and spent more
than one million dollars renovating the Crown Jewel of the
Gold Rush. Now solid and up to code, each of the 31 rooms
are dedicated to gold rush families and filled with their
mementos and antiques and perhaps some of their ghosts.
The first floor offers a 60 seat pub, 80 seat
Victorian style restaurant, 30 seat outdoor patio and Southeast
Alaska’s first microbrewery.
The hotel brought with it two ghosts. The employees of the
hotel call one of them Mary, the ghost of a young woman
who died of pneumonia in her room. She had gone to the hotel
to wait for her man who had gone on a gold-prospecting expedition.
Room 23 is her favorite room Guests who stay in the room
say they experience a chocking sensation, which awakens
them from their dreams in the middle of the night. They
see the ghost standing at the foot of their bed. Once they
are fully awake, she disappears.
Room 14 also is haunted by a strange “light form”
that moves about the room but taken no distinguishable form.
A middle-aged couple stayed in this room with no knowledge
or belief in ghosts or the paranormal. The woman washed
her hair and was in the bathroom when she heard her husband
let out a yell. She opened the bathroom door and saw her
husband sitting in the middle of the bed hugging a pillow.
She laughingly told us later that it reminded her of the
time her husband saw a mouse in their kitchen but instead
of climbing into the middle of the bed, she found him standing
in the middle of the kitchen table. Even though he appeared
distressed she said she could not help but smirk, not appreciated
by her husband.
He excitedly told her that as he sat in the chair looking
at a brochure, he saw a large, pillar of light that came
in like a funnel cloud and swirled around the room and then
disappeared before his wife could come out of the bathroom.
The man was a scientist and he spent the rest of his vacation
trying to figure it out. His wife said it was the most fun
they had in years and would not give up teasing him about
his flight to the middle of the bed.
As of now, there is no explanation for the “ Light
Swirl” ghostly apparition.
