The Stanley Hotel

The ghosts of the previous owners, Stanley and his wife Flora, are still reputed to haunt this spectacular hotel. A piano plays by itself in the music room, a room that was a favorite of Mrs. Stanley. Mr. Stanley spends his time in the lobby or in the billiard’s room. Many of the ghosts in the home appear in their mirrors and those coming up or down the main staircase on the second floor can expect to be followed by unseen presences.

On the fourth floor, the servant’s quarters expose the sounds of children playing up and down the hallway especially near room 418. This happens when no children are in the hotel.
Stephen King found this hotel in Estes Park, Colorado and used it as his inspiration for “the Shining”. He stayed in Room 217. It was in this room that King, inspired by the Stanley Hotel, wrote half of "The Shining."

He noticed a sign in the vicinity of the hotel that said "road closed in winter, and strolled the hallways, he envisioned what it would be like to be trapped inside this massive hotel with no means of escape.

The Stanley Hotel is located in Estes Park, CO at 333 Wonderview.
