Merrehope
Two ghosts haunt this beautiful, stately,
twenty room Victorian, antebellum mansion. Besides its ghosts,
it features unusual woodwork, handsome columns, mantels
and stairway. Originally, Confederate General Leonidas Polk
used part of the home as his headquarters and Union General
William T. Sherman spared the mansion. It is one of fewer
than six buildings left standing in 1864. General Lee resided
here during the war. This home is adjacent to the historic
Frank W. Williams Home.
One is the ghost of a man who committed suicide
in one of the back bedrooms. Most likely they are his heavy
footsteps heard coming from an upstairs bedroom. The other
spirit is of a young lady. Although researchers cannot link
her to the house, she started making appearances when a
staff member placed an antique photo in the house for display.
Many see her ghost late at night, standing in the window
of an upstairs bedroom, holding a candle.
Merrehope is an historical home off of 8th
