Olde Main Street
Inn
The Old Main Street Inn not only is a bed and breakfast
inn but also a bar/restaurant. A friendly ghost by the name
of Jack haunts the place. He loves to walk up and down,
giving delight to the occupants who hear his footsteps especially
going up and down the stairway where it is obvious there
is no one there.
The history of the house is as follows and gives little
clue to the why and the who of “Jack”. The O’Hanlon
family built the house in the 1800s and only the best and
finest they could obtain went into the building and the
decorating of this luxurious inn. A portion of the gold
and green wallpaper covered with gazebos, sailing ships
and flora was kept to show future generations some of the
remains of the opulent days that the inn enjoyed with its
Brussels carpeting and marble washstand in each bedroom.
It was reported in the Chadron Democrat in 1890 that "hotel
laurels will have to be brushed up when the cuisine of the
Hotel Chadron is once more in full blast."
Those were the days where General Nelson Miles walked with
his heavy boots and he and his staff quartered here during
the Battle of Wounded Knee. The boardwalk fronted the hotel
and the railroad was in full speed.
Perhaps it is the General or a member of his staff that
walks the halls and the stairway and moves things from one
place to another as if trying to keep some order in the
house.
One couple told of the time they stayed there and had a
glass of water on their bed stand and then went to sleep
only to awaken to find that water class on a counter in
an adjourning room.
